Dear Friends of the Scott County Family YMCA,
After extensive prayer and consideration, the board and I have concluded that we must permanently close the SCFY pool. We were cautiously optimistic that the pool could be restored; however, we were unable to secure financial commitments to further pursue that goal. The design/build cost for new equipment and the pool structure was estimated at nearly $2,000,000. Our goal was to gain financial pledges of $1,000,000 from key community stakeholders, business leaders and city/county governments before we asked the community for additional support or before we extended our mortgage. While parties were interested in the cause, we were unable to secure the necessary financial commitments required to proceed to the next step.
Our primary consideration is to manage our fiduciary obligations well. We must make wise and prudent financial decisions for the long-term financial health and stability of the YMCA. Several other uses have been considered and we will continue to explore many more options in order to maximize the use of this space and fully serve the community. It is of crucial importance that we achieve these goals while also lessening the operating cost for the facility. We are excited about some of the possibilities being considered for the space. Some of these ideas include: tennis courts, racquet ball courts, meeting/reception rooms, a spin (cycle) area, or a space designated for members eight to twelve years old.
We want to hear your ideas to add to this list. What alternative use ideas do you have? There will be a cost associated with any renovations, but many of these ideas would be much more financially viable to build and operate that a pool. We are excited for the possibilities that lie ahead for the Scott County Family YMCA. Wisdom and grace to you.
