Position Title: Swim Instructor
Community: Aquatics
Supervisor: Aquatics Director

1. GENERAL FUNCTION
Provides direct leadership, instruction and encouragement for students in swimming classes. Acts as a liaison and advocate for YMCA membership development.
2. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A. Current CPR-PR.*
B. Current First Aid certification.*
C. YMCA Child Abuse Prevention Training and Bloodborne Pathogen Training*
D. YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
E. Demonstrated ability to teach the development of swimming skills.
F. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke development.
G. Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average size child.
*Within 30 days of employment or at first available training.

3. JOB REQUIREMENTS
A. Ability to uphold the mission of the YMCA.
B. Ability to encourage others in the areas of self awareness and self confidence through swimming and aquatics.
C. Ability to encourage and effectively communicate with members, parents and students.
D. Exercises mature judgment and sound decision-making.
E. Ability to effectively communicate information on YMCA aquatics and other program components.
4. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
A. Instructs swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
B. Develops positive relationships with participants providing encouragement and guidance.
C. Encourages member and parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
D. Conveys basic information bout YMCA programs and schedules and refers members to other staff as needed.
E. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
F. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
G. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures completing incident and accident reports as necessary.
H. Organizes and puts away class equipment as needed reporting damaged equipment to supervisor.
I. Builds relationships with members and guests addressing questions and concerns as they arise referring to other YMCA staff is needed.
