PERSONAL TRAINER

Position Description
Position Title: Personal Fitness Trainer
Community:  Adult Fitness
Supervisor:  Programs Director
FLSA Type:  Non-Exempt

1.      GENERAL FUNCTION
Develops personalized exercise programs for members providing education, encouragement and instruction in the proper use of both cardiovascular and strength training exercises. Acts as a liaison and advocate for YMCA Membership Development.

2.      ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A.     Current CPR certification.*
B.     Current First Aid certification.*
C.     YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and Bloodborne Pathogen Training.*
D.     YMCA Principles of health and fitness.**
E.      YMCA Personal Trainer certification.**
F.      Minimum high school education with experience in exercise science, physical education or wellness.

*Within 30 days of employment or at first available training.
** Within six months of employment or first available offering.

3.      JOB REQUIREMENTS
A.     Ability to uphold the mission of the YMCA.
B.     Ability to relate to members on an individual basis.
C.     Ability to lead and encourage others.
D.     Ability to develop individualized fitness programs following YMCA guidelines and policies.
E.      Ability to effectively communicate information about YMCA programs and opportunities for member involvement to members and participants.
F.      Ability to respond to safety in emergency situations.

4.      PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
A.     Develops individualized flexibility, cardiovascular, strength and nutritional programs for members.
B.     Develops positive relationships with members and provides motivational support and guidance.
C.     Monitors progress of members throughout their initial twelve weeks of participation.
D.     Adheres to safety and housekeeping standards.
E.      Increases participant awareness of all healthy lifestyle factors.
F.      Encourages member involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
G.     Attends staff meetings and approved training as required.
H.     Ensures safe and effective workouts responding to, and reporting accidents and incidents.
I.        May make follow-up phone calls to assigned participants.
J.       Accurately completes related record keeping.
K.    Assists YMCA staff in monitoring activities in the YMCA facility while on duty.
