Position Title: Lifeguard

1. GENERAL FUNCTION
Maintains safe conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas. Acts as a liaison and advocate for YMCA Membership Development.
2. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A. Minimum age of sixteen years old.
B. Current first aid, CPR for the professional rescuer.
C. Current AED and O2 certifications.*
D. Current Lifeguard certification.
E. Ability to maintain certification level of physical and mental readiness.
F. YMCA Child Abuse Prevention Training and Bloodborne Pathogen Training*
G. Four hours minimum job shadow with an appointed YMCA Lifeguard.
*Within 30 days of employment or at first available training.
3. JOB REQUIREMENTS
A. Ability to uphold the mission of the YMCA.
B. Possess mature judgment and sound decision-making.
C. Ability to relate to people in a positive, but firm manner.
D. Ability to be observant of the pool area, enforcing health and safety rules and maintaining emergency readiness.
E. But ability to maintain a professional attitude and appearance ( including designated uniform and rescue equipment).
F. Ability to communicate information on aquatics and other YMCA programs and opportunities for member involvement to members and participants.
4. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
A. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas.
B. Helps to prevent accidents by maintaining constant conservation of the pool area, enforcing health and safety rules and maintaining emergency readiness.
C. Responds to emergency situations in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures completing incident and accident reports as required.
D. Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
E. Conveys basic information on YMCA programs and schedules to members and, as appropriate, refers members to other YMCA programs and/or staff.
F. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
G. Maintains proper records, including water tests, attendance and maintenance needs, reporting to supervisor if action needs to be taken.
H. Performs routine maintenance of the pool and surrounding areas, to ensure cleanliness.
I. Checks pool and rescue equipment and promptly reports any problems to supervisor.
J. Setup and stores equipment for recreational swim and assists instructors with class setup when necessary.
